The Voluntary Legal Services Program of Northern California welcomes individuals who wish to donate their time and services to help our low income clients with their civil legal problems. VLSP is primarily a volunteer-based organization that assists clients in two ways:

(1) the referral of clients to attorneys for direct representation, and (2) providing legal advice and form completion services at one of our pro per clinics. Volunteers are welcome to assist clients through either means. Our goal is to make volunteering a satisfying experience that will work given the busy schedules of our volunteers.

ATTORNEYS

We welcome attorneys who are licensed to practice in the state of California and who can assist clients who reside in Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin, El Dorado and Placer counties to join our list of volunteers. (more)

PARALEGALS

As a paralegal must work under the supervision of an attorney (except in the case of representation in administrative proceedings), the opportunities for a paralegal to volunteer at VLSP are far more limited than that afforded to attorneys. While paralegals are welcome to sign up to volunteer, we regret that we do not have the resources to utilize many paralegals in our program.

INTERPRETERS

VLSP has an ongoing need for volunteer interpreters who are needed to assist attorneys on cases taken for direct representation, as well as to assist attorneys at one of VLSP's pro per clinics. We tend to have quite a few volunteer interpreters to help us with Spanish; interpreters for other languages  are needed on occasion.  You need not be a certified interpreter to be of assistance. If you are interested in volunteering as an interpreter with VLSP, please complete an on-line Volunteer Application.

EXPERT WITNESSES, INVESTIGATORS and NOTARY PUBLICS

On occasion, VLSP volunteer attorneys need the assistance of expert witnesses, investigators and notary publics on the pro bono cases they take through VLSP. If you are interested in volunteering with VLSP, please complete an on-line Volunteer Application.
