| Since 1981, through the Voluntary Legal Services
Program of Northern California, thousands of volunteer attorneys
and other legal professionals have taken the words of Winston
Churchill to heart and have given selflessly of their time to
provide free (“pro bono”) legal services to many
thousands of the low income residents of the Sacramento region.
Once in a while, I encounter skeptical clients who ask why attorneys
are willing to donate their time to help them. I respond that
there are many attorneys who realize that they have been fortunate
in life and that they want to give back to their community in
the way they know best. When I can call a client to tell her
that we have been able to assign her case to a volunteer, I
enjoy being able debunk the stereotype of attorneys being selfish.
VLSP has a minimal staff and can only function with the assistance
of our volunteers. I wish we had the time to more properly
thank our volunteers for their efforts. We hope that the lives
of our volunteers are enriched by the opportunity to assure
that all members of our community have access to the necessary
legal services that they could not otherwise afford. We are
pleased that we have volunteer attorneys who have been with
us since day 1 of VLSP’s existence.
If you are an attorney or other legal professional, please
consider joining us in serving our community. If you are a
potential client, please feel free to contact us at (916)
551-2102 to see if we can assist you.
