| The Voluntary Legal Services Program of Northern
California, Inc. (“VLSP”) is a nonprofit agency that has
provided free legal assistance with many kinds of civil legal matters
to low income people in the Sacramento region since 1981. We are able
to provide free help because we receive grants and donations allowing
us to help the poor with their legal matters and because attorneys
and other legal professionals donate their services—they work
pro bono.
Through the work of VLSP staff and hundreds of legal professional
volunteers, VLSP is able to provide desperately needed legal help
to thousands of people annually who would not otherwise be able
to afford legal services. VLSP is jointly sponsored by the Sacramento
County Bar Association and Legal Services of Northern California,
and is the main source of civil law-related pro bono assistance
in the Sacramento region.
While primarily based in Sacramento County, VLSP also provides
assistance to eligible clients in San Joaquin, Yolo, El Dorado and
Placer counties. We are committed to promoting equal access to justice
by coordinating volunteer civil legal services, providing specialized
training to our volunteers to enable them to assist our clients,
and by educating our clients as to their rights and responsibilities
under the law so that they might achieve greater independence and
self-sufficiency.
